Serum can, Plasma needs to be refridgerated.

Collecting in a moist syringe, shaking after collection, forcing through a needle when transferring, freezing, excess alcohol on skin.
How are reference ranges determined?
By repeatedly assaying samples from a significant number of clinically normal animals of a given species.
